Salesforce Introduces xGen-Sales and xLAM Models: How Are They Different to LLMs

By Thomas Morgan

Salesforce have recently announced the introduction of two new AI models: xGen-Sales, a proprietary model designed to power autonomous sales talks, and xLAM, a family of Large Action Models intended to deal with difficult tasks and generate actionable inputs.

Both models are positioned to fuel Salesforce’s newest AI system, Agentforce, which will enable customers to create custom AI agents. These models have been developed by Salesforce’s own AI research and aim to equip organizations with the tools necessary to stay competitive in an increasingly AI-driven market.

What is xGen-Sales?

xGen-Sales is a propriety AI model specifically designed to automate sales tasks within the Agentforce task platform. This model is fine-tuned to deliver quick and accurate responses for sales-related activities, such as providing customer insight, managing sales pipelines, and generating leads.

As a Large Action Model (LAM), xGen-Sales excels in function-calling, a capability that enables functioning within other systems and applications. Unlike Large Language Models (LLMs) that excel in generating text, LAMs are built to execute tasks autonomously. This enables them to initiate the necessary actions for AI agents to autonomously carry out tasks on behalf of users.

What is xLAM?

xLAM is a family of large language models that are specifically designed for sales teams. These models provide businesses with cost-effective, faster, and more accurate solutions compared to other larger and more complex models that are currently available.

For example, the xLAM1-B model, which, despite having only one billion parameters, can outperform many larger and costlier models. According to Salesforce, their “tiny giant” can outperform the likes of GPT-3.5 and Claude.

By leveraging xLAMs, companies can benefit from advanced AI capabilities without the expenses and complexities associated with larger AI models.

What This Means For Agentforce

The brand new development of Agentforce is one of the hottest topics in Salesforce at the moment, with Marc Benioff already alluding that it will be a prominent topic during this year’s Dreamforce.

The introduction of these two models takes Agentforce to the next level – it will elevate the platform’s ability to automate tasks, generate actionable outputs, and integrate seamlessly with other systems.

“The models Salesforce is delivering for its Agentforce platform are what give us confidence that we’ll have the capabilities we need to roll out strong and cost-effective autonomous AI capabilities over time. Salesforce is truly paving the way for the AI Agent revolution.” Rena Bhattacharyya, Chief Analyst and Practice Lead, Enterprise Technology & Services at GlobalData

Summary

Both of these exciting technologies are set to elevate Salesforce’s AI capabilities as they continue to improve their products and compete in the wider market. After facing some harsh criticism about their place in the AI era, Salesforce are making some serious waves to silence to doubters.
